We all have seen them. The Nike “AirForce” sneakers, the AF1 All White, the Nike Air Force 1 Triple Black, the Wheat Air Force One, the AF1 OG, distinct versions like the ACRONYM x Nike Air Force 1 High, all these also have a place among the best Nike Air Force 1 colorways.

Designed in 1982, by Bruce Kilgore, the AF1 was the first ever basketball shoe to include Nike’s Air technology. At first, the silhouette was simply called “Air Force”, the “1” designation came later on. Today, as we all know it, the AF1 is one of Nike’s best sneakers.

As said, the one and only was originally released back in 1982. Up ’till today, it still holds an icon-status among many sneakers enthusiasts and collectors all over the world. The brand and the Air Force 1 model is still linked to sportswear, lifestyle and musical sub-cultures as a whole.

We know that at least one thousand colorways have been released and retroed since the original release. Additionally, we have seen way too many iterations and collaborations, year after year. Do you know when you get somehow tired of a particular shoe because you they simply are all over the place?

Well, the exact opposite happens when it comes to this silhouette. Even if they have been around for so long. Basically, no one gets tired of them (and more than two or three generations have experienced them).

However, that does not mean that you are a collector; it just means that you respect and understand the culture and where it all started.

    The inspiration for the name?

Yes, you got that right – the President’s plane, the Air Force One. The release of the shoe was also related to a greater association between Nike and basketball.

By then, Nike’s ethos was all about running, not basketball. So, it was essential that a strong connection between the brand and the sport was put into effect.

Even if in 1982 it was all about success and sales, the truth is that production of the shoe was discontinued one year later. In 1984 there was no Air Force 1s to be seen, anywhere, even if demand was high and if in fact, people were asking around about the shoe.

Two years later, and following strong demand from the public, Nike brought it back. For the first time in its history, Nike brought back a shoe due to popular demand – just how incredible is that?

Today, more than 30 years after its original release, there are more than 2000 versions of the Nike Air Force 1 available, and also some of the best Nike Air Force 1 colorways around.

There are High, Mid, Lows, with leather, mesh, canvas, made in collaboration, celebrating great basketball players or simply taking part in all of street culture’s history. Being a fan, a collector, or just someone looking for a new pair of shoes, there is no way around the Air Force 1.
