    Nike Air Pegasus 34 Review:

Featuring a lighter and more breathable one-piece Flymesh upper, it helps reducing heat built-up during your runs. Moreover, even if super light, the silhouette still delivers excellent support around your foot.

Its super strong Flywire cables work together with the laces to make sure the Pegasus delivers a snug support. Also, and of course, the firm heel-cup allows you to gain extra stability when running.

Loyal to its roots, the extra cushion (now obtained due to the Zoom Air units) in the forefoot and heel also help you. It is all there to give you a little push forward as you run.

For last but not least, you will be able to find a rubber strip along the bottom of the shoe. A feature that also helps you transition from heel to toe, while small cuts are also present, offering a flexible on-feet feel.

It is an extremely comfortable shoe, and it weighs just 285g, a magic combination. Available in many colorways, this is your go-to option if you are in need of a durable silhouette.

If you plan to start running, or if you just plan to get a new pair to keep on going with your running. The super responsive-natured Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 34 is for you. It works both ways, trust us.

    Nike Pegasus History

It all started in 1983 when the first and original Pegasus was released. One key aspect to have in mind was the fact that the silhouette was delivered with a nylon upper, weighing under 300g.

It was brought altogether with a light suede panel, increasing durability. After all, that is just why they were built – for running.

It was designed by Mark Parker and Bruce Kilgore who was working also on the Air Force 1, the first basketball shoe with air technology. Its simple design instead of the usual flashy and flamboyant ones became a vital component for years to come.

Furthermore, the original Pegasus was pretty cheap, costing around $50. Nike’s ultimate goal has always been to make this the “shoe for every runner”.

Nike Air Pegasus History (the Pegasus becomes Air Pegasus):

Five years passed and another iteration of the Pegasus was released. However, its key aspect was an EVA Foam midsole. As it was launched around the same time as the Air Max 1, the shoe was also renamed to Air Pegasus.

One important fact to mention is the fact that the Air Pegasus did not have a full air midsole, but it delivers twice as much cushioning than his big brother, the Air Max 1. Impressive, is it not?

Within weeks, millions were sold across America. The Nike Air Pegasus was by then considered Nike’s top-selling shoe.

As its popularity rose, many iterations started to flood the market. Namely, there were the synthetic leather upper ones equipped with a rubber toe guard.

A feature offering runners another option when running in harsher weather conditions. Even if slightly more expensive, $70, the revamped silhouette was a success.

    (Nike Air Pegasus – 1988)

Nowadays, the silhouette tends to slip under the radar. But in 1988, the Nike Air Pegasus was really considered Nike’s most popular shoe.

Everyone was stocking pairs, making sure that the runner’s favorite shoe was kept for as long as they could. Sure, they were released almost every year, but Nike worked in a way that every runner maintained their interest.

After all, one of the most coveted releases of the bunch is the 1989 iteration. Updated with a soft and breathable upper and a Nike Air midsole, they were released in quite a few colorways thereafter.

    (Nike Air Pegasus – 1989)

As soon as the 90s kicked in, Nike kept on going. They were right in just believing that the Air Pegasus would still be amongst the best running silhouettes of all time.

Steve Spence, a long-distance runner who won Bronze at the 1991 World Championships in Athletics mentioned that the Air Pegasus was his favorite training shoe. On the other hand, we should add that the 1991 iteration was a mix with the 89′ and the yet to release 92′.

The shoe displayed a plastic side paneling and innovative reinforcements on the midsole that the 89′ lacked. Year after year, they just kept on getting better.

Why not some quick Maths as well? 10 years after its original release, Nike sold 17 million pairs of the Air Pegasus. Although, the higher you go, the bigger the fall.

    (Nike Air Pegasus – 1991)

Nike started to feel that way as way too many releases and iterations were releasing. Unfortunately, they were not satisfying their customers. The team went back to the lab and by 1995, the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus came back at full speed.

The new version displayed a Phylon midsole and carbon rubber outsole. Air technology was also becoming more and more popular among runners and enthusiasts, so there’s only one possible outcome.

In 1996 and 1997, a new version was released with a visible air unit. From then onwards, the sky was the limit, believe us!

From the point where the Pegasus stopped being produced up ’till the year 2000, once released again, it was taken from the tracks to the streets. The running silhouette has now become a bit more casual and even if track-ready, everyone was wearing them with a pair of Levi’s.

    (Nike Air Pegasus – 1997)

Eventually, there’s hype and there are the models you like the most. Around here, apart from the 1989 release, the 2004 iteration seems to be our favorite.

Placing function over aesthetics (we sure love how they look, nevertheless), this new silhouette performs just like its siblings, if not better. Small changes were applied such as a lower arch and a lighter and breathable mesh upper.

Additionally and, for the first time, the WMNS version was also updated to match the female anatomy.

    (Nike Air Pegasus – 2004)

Selected as the Runner’s World International Editor’s Choice for Shoe of the Year, the Nike Air Pegasus 2006 placed protection and durability over cushion and flexibility. A few years back, some runners complained that they were way to soft, hence these updates.

Featuring a full-length air unit across the midsole right in between a foam base layer, these minor changes made the silhouette truly next level. Some models were also built with a Nike+ spot where a sensor could be inserted and re-direct information to your iPod with regards to mileage run, speed etc, all downloadable to your laptop.

As much as technology started to develop in terms of “software”, the Pegasus started to be built with “hardware”, having a positive impact when on feet. In other words, Nike Air Pegasus+ 28 launched in 2005 was updated with Flywire technology altogether with a heel counter providing a secure fit as well as a ready-molded sock liner, allowing for a custom fit.

    (Nike Air Pegasus+ 25 – 2008)

From that point onwards, every single release remained true to its DNA, as in, a minimal on-feet beauty, however with a contemporary twist crafted with current materials, such as hyperfuse (originally introduced to basketball during 2010) and Zoom technology.

Plus, Mo Farah also states that up until now, it has been his favorite silhouette. To conclude we can say that the Pegasus is without a doubt one of the best running silhouettes of all time.
