Not even halfway through month of January, and we can already guarantee that the upcoming re-release of the Nike Mars Yard 2.0 will be one of the most coveted and hyped drops of 2020. Not too familiar with this sneaker? Here’s what you need to know about the Nike Mars Yard 2.0.
Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard (2012)
The original Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard sneaker was created way back in 2012 as part of the Tom Sachs: NIKECraft collection. This collection included the Mars Yard Shoe, the Trench, the Marsfly Jacket, and the Lightweight Tote.
The model is inspired by Tom Sachs’ interactions with NASA’s highly specialized scientists, and designed as high-performance equipment for the building of his SPACE PROGRAM 2.0: Mars exhibition. The original Mars Yard was constructed out of a ripstop upper to make them water resistant, all while being placed on top of a Nike SFB sole unit.
Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard 2.0 (2017)
In 2017, Nike and Tom Sachs got together once more to release the second iteration of the Mars Yard, the Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard 2.0.
This version of the model comes with a material update that Sachs did not know was needed until he actually got to wear the shoes for long periods of time to see what worked and what didn’t.
“It passed the abrasion test. (…) It passed all the tests, but when we started using it, it didn’t meet our expectations,” explains Sachs. “It’s not until you really wear something and realize…We used a new material, and we expected better.”
The Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard 2.0 replaces the original Vectran with a polyester warp-knit tricot mesh (a more breathable material that induces fewer internal hotspots). The Red pull tabs are now adhered with a stronger X box stitch.
The tread of the SFB found on the outsole has been inverted for more appropriate wear in urban environments. Additionally, the Mars Yard 2.0 comes with two insoles, mesh and cork, which is a good option to have if you ever feel like rocking these without socks.
Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard 2.0 (2020 Re-release)
Many people are calling the upcoming re-release of the Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard 2.0 the Tom Sachs x Nike Mars Yard 3.0 version since it actually comes with a new tag along with a new style code. That said, it looks virtually the same as the 2017 version with the exception of a few minor updates. The upper of the shoe remains untouched.
The only part of the shoe that looks different is the less pronounced exposed tongue. Although it can’t be confirmed just yet, the 2020 version is also expected to feature new and improved materials from its predecessor while still preserving its signature details.
Additionally, the upcoming re-release of the Nike Mars Yard 2.0 aka Tom Sachs x Nike Mars Yard is rumored to be limited to only 8,000 pairs worldwide. In other words, it’s going to be real tough getting your hands on a pair.
Although no release information has been officially announced, the Tom Sachs x Nike Mars Yard 2.0 is rumored to return sometime during Spring of 2020. Best of luck to all of us in getting a pair.
